PROPOSAL for Photography Workshop by DAVID BRICKMAN

Capital Region photographer David Brickman is available to work as a

visiting artist in elementary, middle and high schools. Brickman has

extensive experience as an exhibiting artist and lecturer, and has taught

art and photography at all levels, including numerous college courses.

Brickman's work has been published in the national photography magazine

Rangefinder, and is held in public and private collections internationally.

His self-published book of photographs "Neighborhood" presents pictures he

has been making since 1993 in the Arbor Hill and West Hill section of

Albany, where he has worked and resided since 1986.

The workshop, ideal for students of all ages, introduces participants to

the fundamentals of photographic seeing and a visual vocabulary, then

applies those concepts by having them photograph in their own

neighborhoods. Simple disposable cameras are used to allow an emphasis on

seeing and personal vision without the distractions of too much technology.

Workshops can be tailored to any time frame, budget, age group or class

size. For example, it would be possible to accomplish something worthwhile

in just a few successive meetings during regular art classes, or a longer

program stretching out over 6 or 12 weeks could be planned. The artist can

meet with multiple groups throughout a regular school day and bring the

same program to an entire school's art students if desired, or a selected

class or classes can sign up.

Costs include $20. per participant for 2 cameras and film (more if a longer

program is designed) plus fees for the artist: $250/day, $1200/week, or

other amount depending on the structure of the workshop. Funds are often

available to school districts through arts-in-education projects, BOCES or

arts grants.

Brickman is also available to give slide talks on his work and that of

related photographers. A typical talk runs about 45 minutes and includes

time for discussion. Brickman is an experienced speaker with many talks

given at schools, universities and arts organizations since 1982. The fee

for a slide talk is $125.
